Create USB Boot Disk

Following these steps could wipe the contents of a drive you have no intention of wiping. Please make sure you fully understand how these steps work before attempting to use them.

Windows

The creation of a USB boot disk or USB Bootable media (what ever floats your boat) on windows is not difficult task and one can be created in a few minutes. This method was tested on Windows 7 but also should work on Windows Vista.

  • Open a command prompt with administrative privileges
  • Type 'diskpart' to start the diskpart tool
  • type 'list disk' to view inserted disks
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
  -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
  Disk 0 Online 232 GB 0 B
  Disk 1 Online 7633 MB 0 B
  • select the USB disk you wish to create as bootable media by typing 'select disk 1' (I am selecting disk 1, which is my 8Gb USB Drive)
  • type 'clean' (this will wipe the disk)
  • type 'create partition primary'
  • type 'select partition 1'
  • type 'format fs=fat32 quick'
  • type 'assign'
  • type 'active' (this marks the disk as bootable)
  • type 'exit' (this will exit diskpart)

Now all that is left to do is copy the media over to the thumb drive. NOTE: the files that are copied onto the USB drive must be for bootable media, if not then it wont boot.

Read only USB Bootable disk

There may be some times when it is beneficial for the USB bootable media to be read only;

  • Open a command prompt with administrative privileges
  • Type 'diskpart' to start the diskpart tool
  • type 'list disk' to view inserted disks
Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
  -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
  Disk 0 Online 232 GB 0 B
  Disk 1 Online 7633 MB 0 B
  • select the USB disk you wish to create as bootable media by typing 'select disk 1' (I am selecting disk 1, which is my 8Gb USB Drive)
  • to check the read only flag type 'attributes disk' the read only state will be 'Yes'
Current Read-only State : No
Read-only : No
Boot Disk : No
Pagefile Disk : No
Hibernation File Disk : No
Crashdump Disk : No
Clustered Disk : No
  • Read Only type 'attributes disk set readonly'
Disk attributes set successfully.
  • Remove Read Only Type 'attributes disk clear readonly'
Disk attributes cleared successfully.
